Sport has very long history right from the stone age. When early man was in search of his food, most of the time he chose the option of hunting. He chased animals, he threw stones to kill animals, he killed animals by his arrows and javelins. In the free time man converted his chasing ability in to running competitions, ability of throwing stones in to shotput, discus and javelin throw.
In ancient Indian civilization, at the time of Mahabharata, Pandavs and Kouravs were the best sportsmen. Bhima and Duryodhana were wrestlers and boxers, Arjuna and Karna were the world’s best archers. Sport competitions were held all over by different kings. Even kings used to organize sports competitions to facilitate their princes to chose their husbands. The competitor who was emerging as the winner used to win the princes.
Greeks are the most sports loving people right from the pre Christ era. They started ancient Olympic movement in 776B.C. in Athens. On every auspicious occasion they used to organise sports and games. They treated sports as their religion. Greeks started amateur sports movement as they were playing sports just for enjoyment and not for any rewards. Winners in Olympics were getting an olive branch as their head gear and the pride of winning was an ultimate goal. Winners in Olympics were treated as the Gods in Greece.
Romans used sports for the physical fitness of their army and gave the touch of professionalism to sports and games. Gladiators had to play the game of death for their freedom, which was the vital reward.
Man is a social animal. Development of social qualities is a long process, Self discipline, self realization and desire to achieve something are the individual qualities and can be developed through games and sports. Earlier parents and teachers used to consider play as the wastage of time and thought it to be hindrance in education. Children were not given enough opportunity to play. In recent years, the psychologists and educationists have made earnest efforts to change the minds of parents by establishing a very strong positive link between achievements in the field of education and all round development of the child through play. The theory of play way in education is now a days considered very important. It is an admitted fact that body and mind are closely interconnected. Every one knows that ‘ healthy mind resides in healthy body’. Sports provides plenty of exercises to the body. It strengthens the muscles, tissues and nerves. If the body of an individual is weak, his sensory organs will not develop fully and response to the external world will be poorer. Therefore sports are essential for the development of physical and mental aspects of the personality.Apart from the achievements in the competition many qualities are developed through sports. An individual becomes physically fit and develops the qualities like tolerance, patience, leadership, teamwork, co-operation, national integration and many more.
